about

Sequel to 2015’s neo-garage classic adds X’s
D.J. Bonebrake and Beach Boy David Marks.

2015’s debut CD by L.A. collective Mod Hippie,Tomorrow Then,
captured ears and imaginations with its sonically explosive reimagining
of ’60s garage rock. As the album scored airplay
around the world, leader Doug McGuire (with collaborator Mike
Schnee) were crafting a new set of songs about a universe out
of control reaching for the wrong answers. Just in time for the
world it predicted, Big Wow arrives.

The new album reunites the cast that made the debut (Adam
Marsland, Teresa Cowles, Connor Claxton, Matt Zook and
others) and adds two key new ingredients from different eras of
rock history: D.J. Bonebrake of the iconic L.A. punk band X on
drums, and original Beach Boy David Marks (later of the Moon
and Warren Zevon) brings psychotic guitar heroics.

Big Wow strips down Tomorrow Then’s onslaught while
broadening the sound. The strain of ‘80s post-punk anarchy
from the debut album rises to the surface on Big Wow – a cover
of Elvis Costello’s anti-fascist anthem “Night Rally” anchors the
set and possibly bests the original, driven by Marks’ and
Bonebrake’s ferocious attack. Likewise on the single “Psycho
Romeo”, the same driving guitar that once propelled “Surfin’
U.S.A.” reinvents a new wave groove for 2017. Bonebrake’s
iconic beat is immediately recognizable on tunes like
“Guatemala” (with Marks adding appropriately surfy guitar licks)
while tastefully underpinning tracks like the angular, timely ballad
“Everybody Knows Who He Is”.

There are many other treasures on Big Wow – from the catchy
and manic title track, replete with 1980s video game samples, to
the 8-minute Pink Floyd-esque closer “Eyes To Heaven.” The
band’s garage rock side is there on tracks like “150 Levers.”
Lyrically in sync with here and now, and musically conjuring
influences and talent spanning five decades of rock, Mod Hippie
continues its standard of excellence on its sophomore release.
